Deputy Sheriff

Seward County Sheriff’s Office has an opening for Deputy Sheriff! This is a full-time position. Join the team!

Starting Hourly Wage: $27.55 or more depending on experience.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS
This is a law enforcement position responsible for safeguarding the lives and property of residents through execution of federal, state, and local laws, and ordinances of cities, villages, within Seward County.
Work involves routine patrol duties including enforcing traffic laws, responding to and investigating criminal complaints, performing related follow-up duties, making arrests and acting as coroner. Work may also involve the transport of prisoners to and from courts and the investigation and development of narcotic cases. Employees in the class may be subject to an element of personal danger and must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent discretion in meeting emergencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior officer who reviews work methods through reports, inspections and observations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of State of Nebraska statutes and Federal laws concerning criminal law enforcement
  • Knowledge of law enforcement and judicial functions and systems
  • Skill in the operation of security scanning and detection devices
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement personnel, co-workers and the general public
  • Ability to use tact and minimal force when interacting with disruptive or combative person
  • Ability to visually detect weapons, contraband and suspicious items and confiscate same in professional and safe manner

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in law enforcement or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Have high school diploma or GED
  • Must be able to legally perform work in the U.S.
  • No convictions punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary for a term of one year or more unless pardon received
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 100 lbs

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • May be subject to pass a written exam, background check, drug and alcohol screen, medical exam, polygraph exam, and psychological assessment
  • Must possess Nebraska law Enforcement Certification or obtain certification within 12 months from date of hire
  • Must pass a local and national level security clearance review
  • Must complete and pass all required defensive tactics, CPR and first aid training
  • Must obtain required firearms and taser certification
  • Must maintain a phone

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT
This role occasionally exposes the employee to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold and/or extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, explosives, risk of radiation and vibration, and possible physical exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. There may be periodic contact with angry and upset individuals.
