Corrections Officer
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to join the team at the Seward County Detention Center.
Starting wage: $22.91 or more per hour, depending on experience. We also offer a shift differential wage and holiday pay of 2.5x the rate.
Must be at least 19 years of age, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, no convictions punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary for a term of one year or more unless pardon received, and must possess a valid driver’s license. Seward County also offers a competitive benefit package.
This is a direct contact entry-level position in a correctional facility. Work involves providing security and care to incarcerated individuals, ensuring inmate safety, enforcing rules and regulations, maintaining order, escorting inmates, and supervising various inmate activities and programs. Work also involves providing input into the treatment of individual inmates and the correctional facility population in general through reporting observations to counseling, medical and supervisory staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior with work reviewed in the form of reports, conferences and observations.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- College level course work in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services or related field and some experience in the following, or any combination thereof: a correctional setting, as a counselor in a social setting, in law enforcement work, in the military, particularly in law enforcement or corrections, or with responsibility for individuals in other institutional settings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be legally able to work in the U.S.
- Must be at least 19 years of age or older
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must be jail certified or receive jail certification within one (1) year of employment in accordance with Nebraska Jail Standards. Seward County will assist an uncertified applicant/employee with obtaining this certification.
- Must have valid Driver’s License
- Must be fingerprinted at the time of employment and the fingerprints cards promptly submitted to the Nebraska State Patrol for a criminal history search: must not have had any convictions punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary for one year or more unless pardon received.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to pass a written exam, background check, drug and alcohol screen, and pre-employment psychological screening.
- Must pass a local and national level security clearance review.
- Must complete and pass or have current certifications in defensive tactics, CPR, AED and first aid training.
- Must maintain a personal phone.
